Wale's Fish and Chips, Nuneaton

Wale's Fish and Chip Shop is conveniently situated near to Nuneaton railway station so you could make it your first or final port of call to the town.

A rich and varied menu includes such items as black pudding in batter, fish nuggets, spam fritters, onion rings, pineapple fritters, and omelettes.

The novelty of Wale's however, is that they serve crinkle cut chips.

On our visit in March 2014, the Chip Fiends had a sit-down meal in Wale's restaurant on the first floor. We love the ambience of this place with its wood panelled walls and utility furniture. We arrived quite early so the photo below shows the restaurant as empty, but it soon got busy with folk ordering breakfasts and fish n chip meals.

One Fiend ordered fish, chips and peas, the other Fiend ordered fish, chips and curry sauce. The meals were accompanied by mugs of tea and a shared portion of roe (£1.15). It was the first time we had tried roe: served like pâté in batter.

The fish (haddock) was served skinless and was fresh and delicious - the top of the batter was a bit thicker than we usually prefer, but it was nice and light. The underside of the batter was a bit soggy, unfortunately.

We like the style of the crinkle chips but today they were slightly overdone.

The mugs of tea were hot and strong - a perfect match with the food.

The portion of mushy peas was generous, thick and 'earthy' - full of flavour. The curry sauce was a Chinese style curry sauce which we like. This was also thick and strong in flavour.

We would definitely go again.
