Billy's Fish Bar, Nottingham

A lucky Mediterranean eye hanging from the ceiling and a lovely no- nonsense portion of fresh fish and chips...

This is what the Chip Fiends found at Billy's Fish Bar in Old Basford, Nottingham, where the staff wear customized 'Billy's' kitchen wear aprons and overalls and make an effort to please their customers.

We ordered a big fish and small chips combo at £5.20. Good value for money and everything was made fresh to order.

The chips were chunky and pale with a good bite. They were chips how you remember them from childhood: Each one a chunk of hot solid steaming potato. Just what you want from a chip.

The haddock had a sweetness that all good chippy shop fish should have. The food was served on paper rather than a wasteful polystyrene tray.

Billy's has a big menu that incorporates kebabs, pizzas and calzone. The traditional fish and chip menu is brief and includes haddock, cod, fish cakes, and portions of 6 fish bites.

They also do deep fried Mars and Snickers bars. Once a Scottish delicacy but creeping ever further south...

Billy's shop is big enough for several tables where you can eat indoors at no extra charge.

Opening times: Sun-Weds: 4pm - Midnight
