North Sea Fish, London

North Sea Fish on Leigh Street is handy if you are ever in London in the Euston / St Pancras area. The prices are good and there is a wide variety of fish on offer (mostly around £5.30 a portion):

Cod, haddock, rock salmon, plaice, skate, roe, calamari, and scampi for example.

You can opt for a jumbo size for a few pounds more. There's also a specials board that includes Scotch salmon and a seafood platter.

This fiend arrived at opening time (noon) and the shop soon became busy. I've previously tried the haddock here, which was very good but on this occasion I went for a portion of rock salmon. It was the first time in memory that I had tried rock. It had a denser flavour than haddock or cod - almost akin to mackerel. There was a little bit of brown flesh (as well as the white), and a spine down the centre, but no small bones I hasten to add, so the bone could easily be removed.

The fish had a nice golden, crispy batter and was fried to order. The chips were a little thinner than those of the average chippy and were golden and crispy too.

Meals here are served in the old fashioned way: in a small grease proof paper bag, then skilfully wrapped in a cone of paper. A very nice touch.

Salt and vinegar is shaken and splashed on the chips for you before the fish is placed on top. You can then add more salt and vinegar if you so wish.

A two-seater bench in front of the shop is handy and there's a park nearby on Judd Street with more benches.

The staff wear 'North Sea Fish' polo shirts and there is an accompanying restaurant next door if you want to go posh.
